Young Scottish and international golfers are benefiting from the expertise Instructors at the state of the art St Andrews Links Golf Academy.

13/07/07, St Andrews, Scotland - The latest success story for the PGA Golf Management team based at the Home of Golf comes in the shape of Ian Redford, who has won the Douglas Gillespie Scottish Under-16 boys’ open strokeplay
championship by two shots at Brunston Castle Golf Club, south Ayrshire.

Ian, who is 14-years-old, is a member of King James VI GC in Perth and plays off a handicap of three.

‘It has been a real pleasure to teach Ian here at the academy,’ said Steve North, director of instruction. ‘He is a hard working and conscientious young man with a great future ahead of him.’

Ian is the son of the former Dundee United star of the same name, whose exploits include a UEFA Cup final appearance and a key role in two famous victories over mighty Barcelona.

‘If young Ian can play golf as well as his father played football, then he can look forward to many more victories,’ said Steve.

A few weeks ago another of Steve’s pupils, Jason Edgeworth of the University of St Andrews, won the R&A Gold Medal on the Old Course, considered to be the strokeplay championship of the town.

The American is only the fifth man since 1890 to win the Gold Medal while representing the university golf club.

‘Jason has been coached here for 18 months and it has been great to see his links expertise grow and blossom,’ said Steve.

Fellow academy student Ross Dixon is the third young player to perform well recently, having tied first in the Boyd Quaich, the international event for university players which is held annually on the New Course and the Old Course.

Ends.
